ARFCN, EARFCN & NR-ARFCN: The Mathematical Channel Raster in Cellular Networks

Understand ARFCN, EARFCN, and 5G NR-ARFCN channel numbering. Master the mathematical formulas to convert channel numbers to exact RF carrier frequencies.

1. Why Cellular Networks Use Channel Numbers Instead of Frequencies

In cellular base stations, user equipment (smartphones, IoT modems), and core network signaling protocols, radio frequencies are never transmitted as raw floating-point numbers like "3549.99 MHz". Doing so would waste signaling bandwidth and introduce rounding errors in software state machines.

Instead, telecommunications standardization bodies—beginning with ETSI for 2G GSM and transitioning to 3GPP for UMTS, LTE, and 5G New Radio—assign discrete integer identifiers known as Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Numbers (ARFCN).

Over the generations, this numbering system evolved from simple linear offsets in GSM (ARFCN) to band-specific formulas in LTE (EARFCN - E-UTRA ARFCN) and finally to the unified Global Frequency Raster in 5G (NR-ARFCN).

2. 5G NR-ARFCN: The Global Frequency Raster (3GPP TS 38.104)

In 5G NR (3GPP TS 38.104 Section 5.4.2), the global frequency raster maps a single continuous integer NREF from 0 to 3,279,165 across the entire electromagnetic spectrum from 0 GHz up to 100 GHz.

The relationship between the RF reference frequency FREF (in MHz) and the channel number NREF is partitioned into three distinct spectral segments, each defined by a specific reference offset FREF_Offs and channel step raster ΔFGlobal:

5G NR-ARFCN Global Frequency Formula FREF (MHz) = FREF_Offs + ΔFGlobal × (NREF − NREF_Offs)
Frequency Range ΔFGlobal (Step Size) FREF_Offs (MHz) NREF_Offs Channel Number Range (NREF)
0 – 3000 MHz (Sub-3 GHz) 5 kHz (0.005 MHz) 0.0 MHz 0 0 – 599,999
3000 – 24250 MHz (Mid-Band) 15 kHz (0.015 MHz) 3000.0 MHz 600,000 600,000 – 2,016,666
24250 – 100000 MHz (mmWave) 60 kHz (0.060 MHz) 24250.08 MHz 2,016,667 2,016,667 – 3,279,165

3. Step-by-Step Conversion Example

Calculating Frequency for 5G C-Band NR-ARFCN = 643334:

• Since NREF = 643334 falls between 600,000 and 2,016,666, it is in Range 2 (Mid-Band).

• ΔFGlobal = 15 kHz = 0.015 MHz

• FREF_Offs = 3000.0 MHz

• NREF_Offs = 600000

• FREF = 3000.0 + 0.015 × (643334 − 600000) = 3000.0 + 0.015 × (43334) = 3000.0 + 650.01 = 3650.01 MHz (3.65 GHz).

This exact mathematical precision ensures that base stations and smartphones synchronize to within fractional kilohertz across global cellular deployments.
